Library/Maker Space

"The mission of the Library/MakerSpace is to encourage students to become lifelong lovers of reading and literature, effective users of ideas and information, and to guide students to use this information to create ideas and innovate the future."

Welcome to our new & evolving Lane Library/Maker-Space (LMS)! The new name represents a shift from the “traditional” Library role. Students will participate in learning new ways to think, design, innovate, and create. The main focus will be on the PROCESS, with less emphasis on the PRODUCT. By learning to think critically and solve problems as we create things, the lessons can apply to aspects of life outside of school.

STREAM: What is STREAM? You have probably all heard of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). STEAM adds Art, and STREAM also includes READING. Lessons will likely begin with a book (what a novel idea!), discussion, and a challenge to apply what was learned and create a product or complete a task. The process will include research, collaboration, ideation, and creation.

PROCESS: The process of creating and problem solving will run in all forms...from low-tech DIY to high tech programming and coding and everywhere in between. The goal is to learn via tinkering and creative play. Exciting times for students!

INSTRUCTION: Combination of traditional Library skills (a variety of enriching and supplemental topics that may include research skills integrated with classroom projects) and MakerSpace projects that align with literature instruction.

COLLECTION: The Library/MakerSpace still offers a traditional role with a variety of materials and resources for our students, staff and parents. We have an extensive print collection of fiction and nonfiction, reference materials, and a web-based catalog system (Destiny). Partnership with the Minuteman Library System further extends our capacity to provide a diverse and rich inventory.

CIRCULATION: Students may borrow up to three books at a time, more for school projects. Books circulate for a two week period, but may be renewed twice (depending on “hold” status).

FINES: There are no fines for overdue books, but students are expected to pay for lost or damaged items.

STAFFING: Full time Professional School Librarian and Educational Assistant, and numerous volunteers.

Lane School Librarian: Linda Coviello

Library Aide: Venus Ho
