What is A.L.I.C.E?

ALICE is a dynamic safety protocol that empowers individuals to make choices based on real-time information in an emergency situation to increase safety and reduce casualties.

What does the acronym mean?

A      ALERT.  

  • Use plain and specific language.  
  • Avoid code words. 
  • Inform as many people as possible in the danger zone that a potentially life threatening situation exists.
  • Convey as much specific information as possible to help individuals make an informed decision. 
  • Use multiple means of communication:  intercom, text, phone, etc.

L       LOCKDOWN.  

  • Barricade the room.
  • Silence phones.
  • Prepare to EVACUATE or COUNTER if needed. 
  • Provides time to come up with a plan based on information – options to EVACUATE or COUNTER

I        INFORM.  

  • Communicate the intruder’s location in real time. 
  • Use any means available to pass on real time information. Text message, Intercom, phone, 911 calls.  
  • Update often.  
  • Anyone with information should communicate it
  • Plain and clear language

C      COUNTER.  

  • Create noise, movement, distance and distraction.
  • Create a dynamic environment (use any objects or items available)
  • Distract the intruder
  • Goal is to reduce intruders/shooter’s ability to shoot accurately
  • Create opportunity to EVACUATE

E       EVACUATE.  

  • When safe to do so, remove yourself from the danger zone.
  • Strategic evacuation based on information
  • Avoid the intruder if safe to do so
  • Leave the building and get as far away as quickly as possible
  • Any means of egress – door, window, etc.
